Family Days Out Column: ‘Splash and play this summer’

Family travel blogger Faye Shearwood shares her top picks for local activities to keep your little ones happy during the school holidays…

Summer has arrived! And with that – the school holidays.

Luckily, we are spoilt for choice in Milton Keynes when it comes to parks, playgrounds and green spaces and, with countryside on our doorstep and cities close by, there is no reason to fear that long 6 week stretch!

To cool off when temperatures rise, my kids LOVE a splash park or swimming pool (or failing that, even a paddling pool).

Our favourite is the Splash and Play in Parson’s Close Recreation Ground. Situated in the heart of Leighton Buzzard, there is also a café, beach, skate park and band stand, with a playground currently in refurbishment.

Best yet, the splash park is entirely free!

We also love Eversholt Swimming Pool, situated in the beautiful village of Eversholt, just outside Woburn.

On long hot days, this is THE outdoor pool to visit as the setting is simply stunning – make sure to book online in advance as it is very popular.

And lastly… Splash ‘n’ Play at Willen Lake is one of the UK’s largest splash parks with over 60 unique water features, with sessions running for 45 minutes at a cost of £5 per child.

Next up, The Patch MK reopens at the end of July (check online for exact timings) – and we are so excited as it is bigger and better this year!

A well as Pick Your Own Sunflowers, Wildflowers and Wheat, there are also mazes to explore (including The Lost World Dinosaur Maze) as well as countless opportunities to explore, build, dig, climb and slide!

We also recently sampled the AMAZING gelato, brownies, cookie cakes and pizza slices at the new Great Gelato in Stony Stratford and I can confirm that they are all truly scrumptious.

Best yet, they sell kid sized gelato, too.

And lastly, we recently went to Thrift Farm to visit the newly refurbished Potting Shed Café, Garden Centre and jumping pillows.

Nestled in the beautiful countryside of Whaddon, at Thrift Farm you can get up close to rabbits and guinea pigs, hand feed goats, collect eggs at the hen house and zoom around on the pedal tractors.

There is also an outdoor play area and zip wire, as well as countless animals to meet in the animal barn. A fantastic day out for all – guaranteed.

Have a lovely summer – until next time! Faye x
