Family travel blogger Faye Shearwood has joined Celebrate:MK to bring you the best child-friendly days out in Bucks and beyond…
As restrictions start to ease and the days grow longer, we’re looking forward to a summer of exploration and adventure in Milton Keynes and beyond.
Luckily, we’re spoilt for choice when it comes to activities for little ones in this lovely leafy county, so here are three of my favourite child-friendly local day trips, that provide a fun day out for all the family.
First up is a beautiful stately home, just a 30-minute drive from central Milton Keynes. Claydon Estate is situated in the heart of the Buckinghamshire countryside, amongst beautiful parkland, lakes and child-friendly walks – along the North Bucks Way.
In the 18th century courtyard, The Phoenix Kitchen serves wholesome, freshly cooked food with plenty of outdoor seating available. We sampled the children’s menu recently and it was delicious!
Little ones will love the open space, and there is even an old fire engine and Florence Nightingale’s carriage to discover.
I can’t wait to visit the magnificent Claydon House, run by The National Trust and reopening at the end of May. Very Bridgerton!
Claydon Estate is also home to a range of local independent shops and businesses, and they regularly host events, including (for 2021), a country fayre and a family friendly folk festival.
Back to Milton Keynes, Caldecotte Miniature Railway is reopening on Saturday 29th May and we can’t wait to ride on our favourite steam trains again. Still priced at a bargain £1 a go, they hope to open every weekend this summer (regulations permitting).
See you there!
Lastly, if you fancy a stroll in a deep dark wood… Wendover Woods in the Chilterns (just outside Aylesbury) has a wonderful Gruffalo Spotters Trail.
Download The Gruffalo Spotter 2 app and follow the interactive trail around the woods, watching as the characters from The Gruffalo story come to life – right in front of you.
We loved discovering mouse, fox, owl, snake and The Gruffalo hidden deep in this magical forest. Don’t forget to take a picnic!
