Food Scene Column: Chocolate treats for your Valentine

Hazel Roberts caught up with Steve Mills from The Chocolate Mill MK to talk about the company’s successful 2020 and how they’re looking to keep the momentum going.

The past few months has required many businesses to adapt and change in order to survive.

Small businesses are probably best placed for changing quickly and, although many are struggling, one local business that has found success in these difficult times is local artisan chocolatier The Chocolate Mill MK.

I caught up with Steve Mills to find out why he didn’t think 2020 had been altogether a dead loss.

“One of the more positive things to have come out of 2020,” he tells me, “is that people have started to discover that there are some fantastic food businesses in Milton Keynes. It’s a thriving scene and one that I am immensely proud to be a part of.”

Although he was disappointed that so many events were cancelled, he has been pleased by the number of customers who made the effort to support local businesses by visiting the farmers markets or by searching online.

In fact, he says that 2020 saw a remarkable 500% increase in sales. Buoyed by this support, he is keen to keep the momentum going in 2021 and promises plenty of chocolate treats for his existing and new customers.

There will be an expansion of flavours within the core group of truffles offered all year round and some
special seasonal flavours to watch out for, including some fantastic new products launching towards the end of the year.

For Valentine’s Day, there will be a return of the popular boxes of truffles named after famous romantic films.

These will be available in special collections of 12 and 24 with one or two of each flavour, ideal for sharing with your loved one.

Easter will also see the return of the impressive truffle themed easter eggs, perfect for a special treat that you can’t buy in the shops.

You can find The Chocolate Mill MK at Odell’s Yard Market in Stony Stratford every Saturday and at Winslow Farmers Market on the first Sunday of the month.

Failing that, you can order online by visiting
