Heather Murphy, owner of Brand Mission, says it’s time to think about how we will stay plugged into the local community to do our own bit.
Modern life is fastpaced – it has pushed us to do more, spend more and do everything at full speed.
But have we forgotten to enjoy the delights on our doorstop and spend money in our local community?
These past months forced many to slow down – myself included. Putting the brakes on the normal 100-mile-an-hour life presented some of us with more time to connect with family and friends, plus, an opportunity to take stock and evaluate what we do with our precious spare time and where we spend our hardearned money.
As the early weeks unfolded and we watched our local businesses suffer, there was a huge shift in consumer behaviour with more people opting to shop locally where possible and ordering takeaways from independents to show community support.
This mindset shift of taking the time to really ‘live locally’ will have helped many businesses get through. As government schemes begin to fade out, it’s important to stay plugged in to the local community as businesses are still facing a tough upward battle.
We all have an important role to play in the survival of our favourite businesses – our local economy will
only recover if we continue Is modern life hampering communities?
with our newly formed local lockdown spending habits in the future. It is a case of use it or lose it.
Here are a few ways you can do your bit to help local businesses:
1. Dine at your favourite independent or order a takeaway if you’re still staying home.
2. Unwind with a beauty treatment, or buy a voucher to redeem later. Harmony Skin & Beauty Therapy is our go-to!
3. Shop – whether you buy some of your groceries from your nearest independent, or purchase something for you or as a gift, try to buy local.
4. Exercise – taking care of your health and wellness is more important than ever so whether you need a class to energise or relax, go to your local studio and take some time out for you (we recommend Whitespace Yoga & Wellbeing Studio who offer both in-studio and live stream classes).
