MKFM Column: Ofcom renews MKFM’s FM licence for another five years in Milton Keynes

The news comes as MKFM celebrated its 5th Birthday on 106.3FM in September.

It’s incredible to think that after a long campaign to bring proper local radio back to Milton Keynes,
MKFM has now completed its first five years on FM.

MKFM started trial broadcasts in 2011 and later launched on DAB Digital Radio during 2013 due to no FM licences being available.

Thanks to a high profile campaign and help from our MPs, Milton Keynes Council, MK Dons, a number of local
businesses and of course our community, we fully launched MKFM on the 7th of September 2015.

Following a restructure in 2017, MKFM has been able to invest further in our programming, provision of news and creation of which is one of the most visited websites for local information in Milton Keynes.

Darren Dorrington, CEO of MKFM, said: “This hasn’t been an easy project to deliver, we have worked round the clock to ensure Milton Keynes has a truly local radio station.

“Following cuts in our local newspapers, MKFM undertook the challenge of providing a comprehensive online news service.

“I am truly grateful to our fantastic team, our sponsors and of course our community who have supported us over the last five years.

“We are looking forward to our next five years and making a massive difference to our community.”

MKFM is now guaranteed to be on-air until at least 2025 on 106.3FM and our new additional FM transmitter
is due to be installed in Wolverton in the next couple of months.

In addition to upgrading our FM reception, MKFM has upgraded our DAB signal which is now available in stereo as well as continuing to develop our online feeds and smart speaker integration.

With more and more people listening to MKFM, if you haven’t joined us yet, we hope you will join us.

You can listen to MKFM on 106.3FM, DAB, at and via your smart speaker.
