MK has become a runner’s paradise thanks to its amazing network of parks and Redways, so much so that local running club Redway Runners is now one of the largest running clubs in the UK with over 3,300 members.
Here at Celebrate:MK we’ve got into the spirit of things by recruiting local blogger Murphy Runs to write a series of columns to help you join in with the fun!
Hello and welcome to my new column for Celebrate:MK!
I’m Anastasia, a local runner and new to MK. I’ll be talking all things running and races!
In a nutshell, I’m a pretty average runner who thrives off the “runner’s high.” I went from non-runner to marathon runner in less than a year, completing the London Marathon in 2018.
Since the moment I crossed that finish line, I’ve never looked back. I love sharing my story and so I am often asked how to get into running.
When I first started, I found it pretty daunting, so I wanted to share my favourite tips to help you get outside and experience that runner’s high for yourself!
JUST RUN:
It sounds simple – and it is. However, the fear of running in public or even with friends can be daunting at first. Remember, every other runner started where you are about to start. No one is looking – just run.
SLOW DOWN:
Go much slower than you think you can do. The aim is to be able to run and still feel as if you could have a conversation. Speed will come with time, practice and confidence. At first, just focus on getting outside and in a good routine.
BE CONSISTENT:
Consistency really is key with running. Keep in a good routine of getting outside to avoid feeling like you’re always ‘starting over’ each time you head outside.
PLAN AHEAD:
To be consistent, planning ahead helps. At the start of the week, I always plan out which days I can run, to make sure it fits around my work and social life. It also ensures I stay accountable to myself!
FOLLOW OTHERS:
If you’re using social media, Instagram is a great place to start. There’s a huge community of everyday runners who run to feel good, get fit or for a particular race.
