MK Dress Hire eablished to help swapping of unwanted clothes

Former Olympic silver medallist turned motivational speaker and event host Gail Emms has set up MK Dress Hire to help people in Milton Keynes make the most of unwanted clothes. She writes for Celebrate:MK discussing how the venture came into being.

It all started when a friend asked me if I had a white dress that she could borrow for a “white party” she was going to.

Excitedly, I looked in my wardrobes (I may have taken over 3 in the house) and pulled out 5 or 6 and drove over to her house.

I felt a bit like Gok Wan as I was putting each one up against her, asking her thoughts and then narrowing it down to 1 or 2 possibilities. My friend asked “who has 6 white dresses??! Only you Gail…” and she is right.

Not many people will have the number of black tie and cocktail dresses that I do, or dresses that are perfect for a day at the races or day guest at a wedding, but that is my work.

As an Olympic silver medallist and world champion in badminton, I was constantly in sportswear and trainers, and now as a motivational speaker and event host, I get to dress for the occasion and over 11 years, I have inevitably amassed a few!!

Most of the dresses have only been worn once. Some have never been even been worn as they have been forgotten about. All are lovely and in fantastic condition.

Normally, most people would put unwanted clothes on eBay, or donate to charity, but I really love these dresses and want to be able to wear them again if I wanted to.

I am becoming more conscious about the fashion industry needing to be more sustainable and that is how MK Dress Hire was formed.

My dresses are available to hire from £10 to £30 (with a deposit of average £40 returned with the dress in good condition) in sizes 8 /10 to 10/12 and in a variety of colours and styles.

On Facebook “MK Dress Hire” or Instagram @mkdress you will see all that is available! I am also available to advise so drop me a message.

I am aware that I only have my dresses currently and that the sizes are limited. I am looking to acquire more dresses in a range of sizes so if you do have some unwanted items in good condition, then let me know!

If you would normally donate to charity, I can also arrange a % of hire of the dress to go to the charity of your choice as well.

So let’s be more fashion sustainable, support local business and charity, and have fun with my dresses at the same time.
