‘Marco’s New York Italian took me back to my Genoa roots’

Marco Pierre White’s new restaurant next to The Holiday Inn has been earning rave reviews for bringing affordable glamour to the Central MK dining scene. We sent along vegan blogger Louise Barnard to really put it to the test…

To me, eating a plantbased diet doesn’t mean you should have to compromise on taste, texture and the joy that food can bring.

After all you’re doing something for the greater good, so why not be rewarded with yummy food that hits the spot?

Marco Pierre White’s new Italian restaurant in Central Milton Keynes is smart, luxurious and everything you’d expect from the man himself.

The layout is perfect – our table felt nicely secluded, we weren’t unintentionally peering over the table next to us and we could keep ourselves to ourselves.

This is especially important when you have to ask for vegan options as it can be (disappointingly) awkward at some restaurants, as your server comes around with a huge list of the ingredients in each dish with “typical vegan” vibes.

But fortunately this was not the case at Marco’s and the staff were beyond lovely – we couldn’t have asked for better service. The new menu is great and I chose the Zucchini Fritti for starter, which made a delicious change from my usual go-to of Bruschetta.

For my main I opted for Aubergine Parmigiana with fresh basil, something I haven’t had since I was in Italy over 10 years ago.

And OMG – I had a ‘Ratatouille moment’ as it took me back to a little restaurant on the corner in Genoa, a stone’s throw from my family home. I’ve fallen in love with Aubergine Parmigiana.

It was succulent, fresh and flavoursome, and in a way made me proud to choose plant-based. This dish proves you don’t have to adapt your tastes when accommodating a diet like mine – trust me, I was once the “dirty burger” type and I still am, however now I’m the “vegan dirty burger” type.

My dinner companion for the evening is a meat eater and he was raving about how delicious his food was too. He had the Crispy New York buffalo wings with blue cheese dip and celery for starter, Roast Chicken with mushrooms and
macaroni cheese for his main course, and Banoffee Pie for dessert.

Marco’s served up a treat for us this evening – it was an absolute pleasure.
