Road Trip Feature: The Akeman Inn is a hidden gem in beautiful countryside

If you like The Navigation Inn at Cosgrove and The Betsey Wynne at Swanbourne, this gastropub should be next on your list. Editor Jon Boyle went to try it out and enjoyed a magical meal experience…

I enjoy nothing more than discovering a brilliant new gastropub.

So when I heard about The Akeman Inn, near Bicester, I grabbed my friend Gin Corrado and we set off on the 30 minute road trip to the picturesque hamlet of Kingswood.

I already knew I would love the pub as it is owned by Oakman Inns & Restaurants, which also has the fabulous Navigation Inn at Cosgrove and The Betsey Wynne at Swanbourne on its books.

The first thing we noticed was the stylish beer garden and, as we walked through the inviting main entrance to the beautifully-lit restaurant, we were surprised to see it heaving with diners on a Tuesday night.

The Head Chef at the venue is Tomasz Kucharski and the General Manager is Rudi Abrantes, but we were greeted by the very friendly waiter Roberto, who walked us to our table and took our drinks order.

He earned huge brownie points straight away for recommending me a delicious pale ale from the specials menu – Fullers Session IPA – which was fruity and packed full of hops.

Gin and I both recognised Roberto and it turned out it was from his previous role as a waiter at Middletons Steakhouse & Grill in MK.

Roberto’s service was special but it is the Specials Menu that really sets The Akeman Inn apart from the rest.

Our three-course meals from this menu were top class. Gin enjoyed his starter of Risotto of the Day, while my Scallops of the Day were the best I have had anywhere.

My main of Moroccan Pork Tenderloin was cooked to perfection and Gin force-fed me a fork-full of his Borletti Beans & Chorizo, such was his delight with the meal.

We finished with Madagascan Bourbon Vanilla Ice Cream Affogato and a lovely coffee. But although our magical meal was over, I felt content in the knowledge that our loving relationship with The Akeman Inn was only just beginning.
