Nancy Stevens previews two blockbuster movies of the 80s that have been adpated for shows at Milton Keynes Theatre
Two of my favourite eighties films have been turned into musicals.
AN OFFICER AND A GENTLEMAN – THE MUSICAL sees Emma Williams play Paula Pokrifki, Jonny Fines as Zack Mayo, Ian McIntosh as Sid Worley and Jessica Daley as Lynette Pomeroy at MK Theatre from July 9 to 14.
When Zack Mayo, in training to become a US Navy Pilot, swaggers into boot camp, Drill Sergeant Foley doesn’t make life easy for him.
When he falls for local girl Paula and tragedy befalls his friend and fellow candidate, Zack realises the importance of love and friendship and finds courage to be himself and win the heart of the woman he loves.
He then becomes both an Officer and a Gentleman. Hit songs include Up Where We Belong and 80s classics You’re the Voice, Girls Just Want to Have Fun, Heart of Glass, and Material Girl.
Emma said: “If you want to be uplifted and broken into a thousand pieces and put back together again, then this is the show for you, with grit, drama, men in uniform, a great soundtrack of 80s hits with our 8-piece live band!”
FLASHDANCE – THE MUSICAL is at MK Theatre from July 16 to 24 – what a feeling!
One of the three most successful films of 1983, it reached the dizzying heights of movie magic, with incredible songs such as What a Feeling, Maniac and Gloria.
Alex Owens is played by the incomparable Joanne Clifton, Strictly Winner 2016.
Her energy is boundless and is like a whirling dervish, dancing like there was no tomorrow! She can also sing and act.
It’s hard to believe that she is not a ‘West End Wendy’ such is her star performance. Ben Adams, formerly of A1, plays Alex’s boss and love interest.
It is a joyful show, with a fabulous soundtrack, phenomenal dancing, and, of course, Joanne Clifton!
