Beauty and the Beats column: Ariana Grande Single Review

Song: No Tears Left To Cry

Artist: Ariana Grande

BB RATING: ★★★1/2

Almost one year on from the devastating Manchester Arena bombing that killed 22 people, Ariana Grande is back with a brand new song, ‘No Tears Left To Cry’.

Despite stepping into 2018 with a fresh state of mind, this latest single off her upcoming fourth studio album shows that the 24-year-old pop star has not forgotten Manchester.

“Ariana is a force to be reckoned with”

Taking on a darker, more electronic sound than we’re used to from the princess of pop, a deeply emotional chorus is softened by a dance-friendly drum beat that manages to lift the track into more upbeat territory. Perhaps this is symbolic of the spirit and resilience of her fans. Lyrics like “I’m loving, I’m living, I’m picking it up” remind us that love will always trump hate.

In the music video for the new single, Ariana is seen walking down the walls of a twirling city – a stark reminder of the events of May 2017 that turned her world upside down. I love the anti-gravity theme. Ariana will not let the attack hold her down, and neither should we. Beginning with a city in darkness which moves to light, the video finishes on a bright new day.

You’ll also notice a small bee fluttering past right at the end. Of course, the worker bee is the symbol of Manchester.

Simultaneously showing us her strength and vulnerability in this latest track, it’s a sign of things to come. This is a new side of Ariana that we have not seen musically before, as she’s had a lot of growing up to do in the last few years. Terrorism may have snatched her innocence, but this fierce new Ariana is a force to be reckoned with. Working with producers like Pharrell Williams, I’m sure her new album will be just as powerful. I can’t wait to see what this Dangerous Woman does next.
