MKFM Column: Charitable McDonald’s chief Ken has the face for radio on MKFM

Generous charity auction bid wins MK franchisee a two-hour show.

If you are a regular Twitter user you may have seen the hashtag #KenOnMKFM doing the rounds recently.

This was referring to local McDonald’s franchise owner Ken Tomkins taking over the airwaves on MKFM from 7-9pm on Sunday February 25.

Although Ken has been a regular guest on MKFM over the last few years for interviews, discussing various McDonald’s initiatives including Love Where You Live and Coffee With A Copper, or their charity partner Ronald McDonald House, Ken has never been in control of the desk in the studio.

So, when at the recent Ronald McDonald House Charity Ball, MKFM donated a studio tour and a two-hour radio show as an auction prize, Ken gave a generous bid to the charity he holds close to his heart and won the prize to take to the airwaves.

Ken commented: “Being a Principal Partner of MKFM I have visited the studio several times for interviews, but after my hosting debut I have a new appreciation for the presenting team!

“There was so much for me to consider, from music choices to local news and events, but I think I got the hang of it!”

Ken continued: “I have proudly supported Ronald McDonald House since I joined McDonald’s back in 1985 and am proud that since becoming a franchisee my restaurants have raised nearly £10,000 a year for the charity.

“In Milton Keynes we often find people who have personally experienced the work of Ronald McDonald House, or know friends and family who have. It’s incredible to hear the difference the charity made in a very difficult situation.”

Ronald McDonald House Charities provides free ‘home away from home’ accommodation to families while their child is in hospital. There are 14 Ronald McDonald Houses across the UK, all located close to specialist children’s hospitals, with the closest House to Milton Keynes located in Oxford.

They are open 365 days a year and are equipped with everything you would find in a family home. Families can get a good night’s sleep, prepare their own meals and feel at home, knowing that they’re only a moment away from their child.

MKFM will continue to support the great work of Ronald McDonald House and, based on his on-air skills, may even call upon Ken to stand in as a presenter in the future!
