Woughton Leisure Centre won Group Exercise Facility of the Year at the National Fitness Awards 2017 after a stylish £1.5million refurbishment from new owners 1Life, in partnership with MK Council.
Five new studios host a whopping 350 classes a week so we sent along Gemma Burnikell to road test one. She was left gobsmacked by the centre’s stunning transformation.
Wow, what a difference a few years makes.
I used to go to Woughton Leisure Centre for trampolining and badminton but, after four years away, it felt like I was walking into a totally different place as I turned up to review the centre for Celebrate:MK.
1Life’s transformation of the venue has been nothing short of spectacular. From the modern, clean and welcoming reception area and new Costa coffee shop, to the state-ofthe-art equipment in five brand new studios, the centre is unrecognisable.
I was warmly greeted by Charlotte – who filled me in on the exciting £1.5million refurbishment that helped Woughton Leisure Centre to win Group Exercise Facility of the Year at the National Fitness Awards 2017 – before she took me to try out a popular class called THE TRIP.
THE TRIP is an immersive indoor cycling experience that escaltes riders’ motivation and energetic output, propelling them into fantasy worlds through a cinema-sized digital screen and synchronised music.
It is only available at nine studios around the world so it is quite a coup for the centre to have 25 THE TRIP classes per week for members.
The live instructor led a fun, high intensity 40-minute session that completely took my mind away from the fact I was exercising.
As a group, we cycled to San Francisco, over bridges, under water through the sea and past the sharks!
I really felt like I was going up and down the hills and the multi-peak trip experience became my own as I adapted to the visual and audio stimulation around me.
The instructor cued all the moves and had a huge influence on my motivation to pedal faster.
As a new class member, I looked at other group members during the workout and they were all going at their own pace through the ‘trip’ experience, so it’s suitable for both beginners and advanced cyclists.
There are 10 other ‘trips’ to go on, which I’m keen to try in the future!
While I was still buzzing from the class, Charlotte informed me that 1Life runs 5 other centres across Milton Keynes including THE DEPOT at Woughton on the Green and 1Life Health & Wellbeing Studio at Windmill Hill Golf Club, which she then took me to see.
The 1Life Health & Wellbeing Studio is equally modern, stylish and packed with equipment ideal for people looking to improve their strength and balance.
As I said goodbye to Charlotte, I couldn’t wait to come back and try more 1Life classes such as BODYCOMBAT and BODYPUMP. And with the option to pay as you go, or pay monthly, there’s no reason not to!
